Generals Take Down Bombers 4-3 in 11 Innings07/25/2011 9:39 PM
![]() John Longoria led the Generals offense with 3 hits on Monday night! With the score tied at 3-3 in the 11th inning on Monday night, Victoria Generals second baseman Freddy Villalobos delivered an RBI single to left field to score Kevin Phillips to give the Generals a 4-3 lead over the Brazos Valley Bombers.
Relief pitcher Jared Hopper came on in the bottom of the 11th and navigated his way through the middle of the Brazos Valley lineup to pick up his first save of the season.
The Bombers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI ground out by the TCL’s leading hitter, Trey Porras.
The Generals answered in the top of the second with three runs off of Bombers starting pitcher Andrew Massey. Trent Wagner and John Longoria singled to get the inning started. With one out, Brad Shankle singled to right field to score Wagner to tie the game at 1-1. After the second out of the inning, Cody Abraham singled to right to score both Longoria and Shankle to put the Generals ahead 3-1.
The Bombers added another run in the fifth inning off of Generals starter Blake Denman. Denman pitched seven innings on the night, allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out three, but did not factor in the decision.
The Generals were one out away from securing a 3-2 victory, but a wild pitch from Generals closer Covey Morrow allowed pinch runner Scott Arthur to score to tie the game. Arthur was pinch running for Jacob House who was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth. Arthur had advanced to second on a balk and to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Despite blowing the save in the ninth inning, Morrow would end up getting credit for the win as he pitched a scoreless 10th inning. It was Morrow’s first win of the season for the Generals.
The Generals offense pounded out 14 hits in the game. Eight of the nine Generals starters collected at least one hit in the game. John Longoria led the Generals with three hits. Cody Abraham, Freddy Villalobos, Ryan Dalton, and Trent Wagner each had two hits.
The Generals snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 20-24 on the season and 8-7 in the second-half. The Bombers fell to 21-23 overall and 6-9 in the second-half.
The Generals and Bombers will meet again on Tuesday night for game two of the two-game series in Bryan at 7:05pm at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark.
The Generals will then return home on Wednesday to take on the Alexandria Aces at 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium in Victoria.
