Generals Hold on to 9-8 Victory over Bombers

 

Generals Pull Out Another Close Game 9-8 Versus Bombers

July 21, 2023 – The Victoria Generals battled the Brazos Valley Bombers for a third straight night and won a nailbiter 9-8. The Generals' offense had only six hits but with discipline at the plate found a way to win another one run game. 

 

On the mound for the Generals was Houston LHP Bryson Walker, who pitched six innings allowing 4 earned runs on seven hits and was the winning pitcher. In relief of Walker was Blinn RHP Blane Zeplin, pitching 0.2 innings and allowing four runs off three hits. Murray State College LHP Ryan Dugas would then enter the game for 0.1 innings, allowing no runs or hits. Closing the night out for the Generals was Kansas Wesleyan P KT Gearlds, who pitched two innings allowing only one run with three strikeouts. 

 

 The Generals bats showed up early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Brazos Valley would score two runs to begin the next inning. In the following inning, another run would come around to score for the Generals. Brazos Valley would not go away with one run in the third before the Generals scored two of their own in the fourth. After the fourth, the Bombers would score again with one run in the fifth. Going into the bottom of the sixth, Victoria scored two runs but Brazos Valley would fire back with a four spot in the seventh but that would be all the Bombers would score as the Generals held on. 

 

Offensively for Victoria, UT-Arlington DH Tyce Armstrong hit an RBI single scoring Southeastern Florida CF Cristopher Munoz in the first inning. Texas State RF Xavier Perez would follow up with a 2-run double, scoring Armstrong and Kalamazoo 1B Robert Newland. Perez would steal home after an error by the Bombers catcher. In the second inning, Texas State LF Damien Whitfield would draw a walk and come around to score due to a wild pitch. Later in the game, Wharton Junior College C Levi Castilleja would hit a triple to begin the fourth. 2B Easton Dowell would be hit by a pitch which allowed Whitfield to make his way to the plate and hit a 2-run double, scoring both Castilleja and Dowell. In the sixth, Abilene Christian SS Riley Bender would walk, Castilleja would single, Dowell would be hit by another pitch to load the bases and another wild pitch would allow Bender to score. Armstrong would draw a walk and Newland had an RBI walk that helped the Generals find a way to a victory. 

 

The Victoria Generals will be back in action tomorrow night against the Brazos Valley Bombers with first pitch beginning at 7:05 p.m at Edible Field.
