River Monsters Ninth Inning Grand Slam Defeats Generals

 

Generals Fall to River Monsters after Walk-Off Grand Slam

 

July 13, 2023- The Victoria Generals traveled to Seguin to take on the River Monsters at Smokey Joe Williams Field and walked away with an 8-7 loss. Victoria’s, now standing at 22-12, put up twelve hits and seven runs. 

 

UTRGV RHP Alex Havlicek started on the mound and held Seguin to four runs in 4.2 frames on ten hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Relieving Havlicek in the fifth was Galveston College LHP RJ Patrick. Patrick pitched 2.1 frames allowing two hits and no runs and one strikeout. TAMUCC RHP Austin Dean closed the game for Victoria pitching 1.2 frames and allowing two hits, four runs, one walk, and handing out two strikeouts. 

 

Western OK State RF Derek Cerda got the first hit of the game which brought in Eastern OK State 2B Drake Kerr as he racked up two hits and two RBIs in his performance. ACU SS Riley Bender sac-fly in the third brought in UT-Arlington 3B Tyce Armstrong. Seguin plated one run in the bottom of the third off an RBI-single. Victoria added another run to their lead after another RBI from Cerda. With bases loaded for VIctoria, UIW LF Ray Mendoza walked in to extend the General's lead 5-1. 

 

Seguin responded in the bottom of the fifth adding four runs off three hits before Patrick came in to finish the inning. Kerr and Bender added two runs in the top of the seventh after an error by Seguin. Cerda got another hit, but could not be brought in as Victoria led 7-4. Cerda went 3-5 with two RBIs helping the Generals bounce back from last night's loss to Brazos Valley. 

 

Seguin rallied in the bottom of the ninth drawing in a grand slam to capture the walk-off victory 8-7 against Victoria. 

 

Victoria will be back in action tomorrow night as they hit the road again for a rematch against Seguin. First pitch from Smokey Joe Williams Field is at 7:05 p.m.
