Generals Dominate River Monsters

Generals’ Offense Explodes in 19-2 Win Over River Monsters

June 18, 2023 – The Victoria Generals launched an offensive onslaught at Riverside Stadium in a 19-2 victory over the Seguin River Monsters, collecting 13 hits, drawing 17 walks and striking out just three times. Victoria returned to .500 with the triumph and improved to 8-8, while Seguin fell to 4-11. The Generals are now two games back of the league lead.

All but one member of the Generals’ starting lineup tallied an RBI, with Galveston College LF RJ Patrick at the forefront with four. Eastern Oklahoma State CF Drake Kerr, UT-Arlington 1B Tyce Armstrong and Cornell 2B Ryan Porter had multiple RBIs as well. All but one starter recorded a hit, with Wharton County Junior College C Levi Castilleja leading with three hits. Armstrong, Patrick and Murray State College PH/DH Gage Gilchrist had multiple hits each. Armstrong, Porter, UT-Rio Grand Valley SS Kade York and Weatherford College DH Dayton Tockey were each walked three times.

On the mound, A&M-Corpus Christi RHP Kody Gibbs earned the win with 4.1 starting innings, allowing one run on four hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Murray State College LHP Ryan Dugas notched 3.1 scoreless frames of relief, giving up just one hit while striking out five. Houston LHP Bryson Walker closed out the final inning with a run on two hits and a punchout.

Victoria picked up its first run in the opening frame. McNeese State 3B Easton Dowell doubled before stealing third and was brought home on an Armstrong sacrifice fly. Seguin evened the score in the fourth after scoring a run on a wild pitch. It was all Generals after that as they responded with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Armstrong kicked off the scoring with a 2-RBI double before Patrick recorded an RBI fielder’s choice. A wild pitch plated Patrick, and Kerr wrapped up the inning with a 3-run triple. He was tagged out at home trying to stretch into an inside-the park home run.

The Generals built on their 8-1 lead in the next inning as Patrick picked up an RBI single, Kalamazoo College RF Robert Newland collected an RBI sacrifice fly and Porter was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to make it 11-1. The 12th run came across in the seventh on another Patrick RBI fielder’s choice.

Victoria put up another seven-spot in the eighth inning, beginning with an error by the pitcher that allowed a run to score. Another run came across on a wild pitch before Gilchrist’s RBI single. Patrick and York then both drew bases-loaded walks, and Castilleja hit an RBI single prior to Porter’s bases-loaded walk. The River Monsters added a run in the ninth on an RBI single to round out the scoring.

Victoria hits the road for a rematch with Seguin on Monday, June 19, at 7 p.m. at Smokey Joe Williams Park. The Generals return to Riverside Stadium on Tuesday, June 20, to face the Acadiana Cane Cutters at 7:05 p.m. on Free Ticket Night, presented by Bobcat of Victoria.
