Generals Sweep Bombers on Road with 8-3 Win

Tyler Smith improved to 3-2 on the season on Tuesday night.
The Victoria Generals won their second game in as many days to sweep the Brazos Valley Bombers in a two-game road series in Bryan.  The Generals topped the Bombers 8-3 on Tuesday night behind timely offensive production and a great effort from the pitching staff.

Generals starter Tyler Smith picked up his third win of the season, pitching five innings and allowing just three runs on six hits while striking out five.

The Generals never trailed in the ballgame as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Freddy Villalobos and Trent Wagner.

The Bombers cut the lead to 2-1 with a single run in the third inning, but the Generals responded with two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Wagner and an RBI single by John Longoria.

The Bombers scored their final two runs in the fifth inning to cut the Generals lead to 4-3, but that would be as close as they could get on the night as the Generals bullpen put up four straight innings worth of zeros in the Bombers run column to close out the game.

Jared Hopper came on in the sixth and seventh innings and allowed just one hit.  Alex Jack pitched a scoreless and hitless eighth inning before Jordan Harrison came on in the night and did the same.

The Generals big offensive inning on the night was the sixth when they put up four runs.  With the bases loaded and one out, Longoria delivered a two-run single to right field.  One batter later Grayson Porter hit into a fielder's choice allowing Wagner to score.  Cory Hunt later singled to center field to plate Longoria and give the Generals the 8-3 lead.

Longoria collected three hits for the Generals for the second straight night.  He also added a run and three RBIs.  Chad Kruse, Wagner, and Villalobos each had two hits in the game.

The Generals pulled even in the standing with the Bombers as both teams are now 21-24 overall on the season and tied for fourth place.  The Generals are now 9-7 in the second-half as the Bombers fell to 6-10.
